Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook asks their employees to return to offices 3 days a week starting in early September. Apple CEO also added “flexible setup to be provided consequently”. Tim Cook sent out an email Wednesday informing staff of the change. Apple further confirmed this information with CNBC.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said

  • Employees work in the office on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Though some teams that need work in person asked to come back four to five days a week.
  • Open option of working remotely on Wednesdays and Fridays. But that arrangement would have to be approved by managers.

According to The Verge

  • Cook wrote in the email, sent Wednesday morning “we’ve been able to achieve while many of us have been separated. But the truth is that something essential is missing from this past year. That is each other”.
  • Furthermore added “Video conference calling has narrowed the distance between us, to be sure, but there are things it simply cannot replicate.”

COVID-19 vaccines came into action and the cases have started decreasing. So it wouldn’t come as a surprise that the companies are expecting employees back in offices. Due to the pandemic, many tech companies allowed a relaxed attitude towards work-in-office. Apple famously discouraged working from home prior to 2020. Apple’s stance on remote work, while getting more relaxed, is still conservative compared to the other tech giants.

Google announced in May “20% of its employees would be able to work from home permanently”. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, comments on work from home saying “remote work is the future”. He also encouraged employees they can all work from home forever, as long as they get their manager’s approval. Twitter similarly said “employees will be allowed to permanently work from home if their jobs allow for it”.

Tim closed with “I know I’m not alone in missing the hum of activity, the energy, creativity and collaboration of our in-person meetings and the sense of community we’ve all built. For now, let me simply say that I look forward to seeing your faces”. He further encouraged all the employees to get vaccinated.
